Cast

Scott Adkins as Casey

Seriously... I don't find it "cool" to have a muscular-ben-stellar-alike guy to star the role of a ninja. I would prefer a well-built, but not over-built person for this role. Ninja were supposed to be mysterious, swift and skillful. In the whole movie, I don't see the "ninja" in him. To me he's just like a hitman, who can fight more skillfully than one, but definitely not a ninja. Ninja was supposed to be one who can give an instant killing blow but it disappoints me to watch him take so long to take down a couple of fat bouncers.

Mika Hijii (肘井美佳) as Namiko

She's the heroine in the movie. I was scratching my head when she first appeared in the movie, trying to figure who she is as she looks very familiar. It suddenly struck my head - Kaoru from the series "GARO".  Anyway I still think that she looks lovely - her image in this movie as the same as in GARO.

Not a very strong character in this movie. She's the typical dad-got-killed-and-she-got-caught-waiting-for-hero-for-the-rescue type of character. In the beginning she can fight pretty well with a bo staff but later in the movie she just got pawned easily - doesn't really resemble a daughter of the Soke (宗家, master) of a Ninja dojo. I expected more from her.

It was funny to see how she comes up with a very nice fighting stance when going against Masazuka in the police station, only to get knock down by him after delivering just 1 kick. I couldn't stop laughing after seeing that.

I did felt a pain in my heart when I saw her getting beaten up in the train scene. I know it's movie but still i felt pity that such good looking girl had to get beaten up so badly.

Tsuyoshi Ihara (伊原剛志) as Masazuka

Probably more suited to be a ninja in the movie. I like to see him fight with his katana (probably just a stuntman since he's wearing the ninja suit). He's probably like Snake (from the game "Metal Gear Solid") with some ninja skill in him. Fights with both modern and traditional weapons - Gun + Katana... sounds like Dante (from the game "Devil May Cry") to me. Also I like how he uses night goggles to his advantage - smart move, that should be the way of the Ninja, to kill you silently in the dark. I prefer to watch him over Scott Adkins.

Plot

The story was pretty straight forward:

The Soke of the ninja school, Master Takeda, father of Namiko has the role to preserve and protect the legendary weapons passed down by the Koga (甲賀) clan ninja, stored in the Yorui Bitsu. There were 2 candidates in which he needs to choose from to pass down the role of the Soke - Casey and Masazuka.

Casey was an american, who was abandoned by his parents in Japan since he was a kid. Master Takeda took care of him and trained him the skill of "ninja". Masazuka on the other hand, trained under Master Masazuka since young and his aim was always to be the Soke.

So the whole plot was Masazuka got jealous of Casey and tried to him during a practise. Masazuka was expelled from the school by Master Takeda. Several years later Masazuka became an assasin/mercenary and tried to obtain the Yorui Bitsu. Master Takeda sensed the danger and had ordered Casey and Namiko to transport the Torui Bitsu all the way, from Japan to New York, to be kept in the vault of an university.

So in pursuit of the Yorui Bitsu, Masazuka killed Master Takeda and the other apprentices in the dojo, traced down the location of Casey and Namiko, created chaos in NYC, caught Namiko, treatened Casey to hand out the Yorui Bitsu and ended up killed by Casey by a stab to the stomach. Story ends....phew....that was pretty easy...

My Opinion

There are a few things which bothers me:

1. Why are they called ninja if they couldn't even do any "jutsu" (術). Too much Naruto for me maybe... But I expect at least some fire breathing technicque in the movie.

2. Why can't Namiko, the daughter of the Soke, trained since young under her father fight decently?

3. If the weapons in the Yorui Bitsu were really so important, how come in the end of the movie they were scattered all around the floor and no one bothered picking them up?

Overall I find the story very "predictable". I can already tell my friend the ending and he was surprised and thought that I had read the sypnosis of the movie.

The character I like best is still Masazuka as his acting skill, his expression was the best and he portrait the image of "ninja" the best. Casey, looked more like Subzero/Scorpion (from the game "Mortal Combat") and his over-built muscle really put me off - Bruce Lee-alike actor would have been better. How can such muscular person try to hide himself behind a tree or jumps over a wall easily like an ninja? ok there wasn't such scene but this is what I expect from a ninja.

The part I enjoyed the most was the fighting by Masazuka, not by anyone else. Skill, precise and it really does look like ninja/samurai. Not like Casey, fighting with fists and kicks like ordinary human.

Ok I admit that I'm being very bias towards Masazuka but this is just personal opinion. In a nutsehll, I would watch this movie again, but just for the fighting scene.

Now I'm struggling whether or not to watch "Ninja Assasin".

Personal Review on Sandisk ImageMate All-in-One Card Reader

I was walking around 1 Utama looking for a new CF card reader. The card reader that I was using gave me a horrible speed of average 2.5MB/s. I always thought it was normal until I tried my friend's card reader.

Vincent told me that myjunk has got himself an Apacer Seno card reader which gives excellent speed, 4GB of data took ~4 minutes to transfer. Impressive!!! If I were to use my card reader to transfer 4GB of data to my lappie, it'd have taken me ~40 minutes. Imagine how frustrate I am when I am on a wedding job, looking at the transfer progress bar, not able to do anything but wait, panic and eager to start to do my slideshow but without the photos.

Anyway, I was looking around 1U for the Apacer card reader. I went to 3 IT shops but couldn't find 1 - only Apacer SD card reader. So I thought I would try my luck in a camera shop and went to Foto Shangri-La, the one located 1 floor below the GSC cinema. They don't carry Apacer card reader but instead, they have the Sandisk ImageMate All-in-One card reader.

This was the card reader which I wanted to get initially before I heard about Apacer from Vincent. I decided to get Apacer because of the price. According to Vincent, myjunk got it for around RM80. Well I was desperate for a fast card reader so I ended up buying the Sandisk. It cost me RM129 - Couldn't get a discount from the shop. But since Shashinki was selling it for the same price, I thought the price was reasonable. It comes with standard 2 year warranty.

The Packaging

packaging

I open up the box and found the following items in it - the stand, instruction manual, USB cable and of course, the card reader itself.

content

This is how the card reader looks like attached to the stand.

How does the card reader attach to the stand? Easy... using magnet. The base of the card reader and the stand is actually magnet which attract each other, align by the 2 slots show in the following photo. This look very stylish but if you were to ask me for my opinion, I would say that this is not practical. This is not strong enough to hold the 2 parts together - the card reader would easily detach from the stand and topple if an average force is applied from the side. So, handle with care!

Although it is stated on the box a read/write speed of up to 32MB/s (with an asterik). I didn't expect it to be able to go up to that speed so I decided to give it a try. I tried to transfer files from my lappie into my Sandisk Extreme III 8 GB CF card which has a read/write speed of up to 30MB/s.

And the result? As seen in the photo below, it takes 4 minutes 50 seconds to transfer the remaining 3.83GB of data with an average speed of 13.5MB/s. Although it didn't live up to what was stated on the box, I am still a happy owner of a faster card reader.

Gum Sniffing - Crime or Not?

Gum sniffing (or whatever it is called by different people) - how many of us actually know what does it mean?

There were always a group of young children, age between 13 and 17 (my guess based on their appearance),  who gather at the walking track just beside my house since 3-4 months ago - regardless of day or night. You might think that it is normal for young children to gather together. Wait till you see what they are actually doing.

These children were actually sniffing gum. "Gum?" you might ask? Yes, gum such as the Dunlop gum, which we usually use to repair our shoes.

And the next question could be "why?"? Simple - as an cheap and easy-to-get substitution for ecstasy/drugs.

By sniffing the fume let out by the gum, one could easily get "high", as if he/she has taken ecstasy pills - of course, minus the expensive price that they have to pay for real pills. Furthermore, gum can easily be purchased from any shops.

What are the outcomes or side effects? Those who had gone "high" would usually talk/scream loudly, fight among each other, damaging the public facilities at the park etc. These actions is really troubling the residents in our housing area.  During the night, the shouting and fighting really is a nuisance, not to mention the banging of zinc plates etc. There were already cases where local residents were being harassed by these children during the day time.

My parents and I did try to call up to the police many times but so far we have not seen any actions from them. The usual answer that we have gotten from the police is that gum is not an illegal item, therefore sniffing gum is not a crime and they cannot do anything to stop them. I really think that this reason is unacceptable.

These photos were taken on the 15/11/2009 at around 12pm.

Notice the motorcycle in the last photo? They will sometimes ride the motorcycle around the walking track, as if they're moto GP racer, without helmet after getting high. This doesn't only danger themselves but also to other people around.

The reason I post up these is clear. I want to convey the message to everyone that there is a serious problem in our society - the problem in upbringing our future generation. If we do not stop them from doing the wrong thing when they're still young, what can we expect from them when they grow older?

The bottomline is - is this still considered as legal? or can it be considered as a crime? I would really like to listen your opinion on this.
